A retractable awning is four parts: a frame, a pair of arms, a fabric and a motor. Almost every brand in Australia buys the cheap version of all four and sells it on the strength of the showroom. Here is what we buy instead, and why it matters twenty summers from now.

01 — THE FRAME

Multi-chamber aluminium, not a hollow tube.

The cassette and arms are extruded 6063-T6 with internal ribs, the same principle that stops an aircraft wing folding under load. A hollow extrusion of the same weight bends; this one does not. Then it is powder-coated twice and salt-spray tested to 1,000 hours, which is what decides whether you still have a straight frame after ten summers within sight of the ocean.

02 — THE ARMS

Double-link chain arms. Motorcycle hardware.

Most awnings in this price bracket use a steel cable inside the arm. Cables stretch, and a stretched cable is why an awning starts to sag on one side after two seasons. We use forged arms with a stainless double-link chain — the same construction as a motorcycle drive chain — rated past 100,000 open-close cycles. Open it twice a day and that is 130 years of duty.

03 — THE FABRIC

Solution-dyed acrylic. The colour is the fibre.

Cheap awning fabric is polyester with colour printed on the surface, which is why it goes chalky and pink after three Australian summers. Ours is solution-dyed acrylic: the pigment goes in while the fibre is still liquid, so there is no surface to fade off. It blocks 98% of UV, sheds water, and carries an 8 out of 8 colourfastness rating — the top of the scale, not near it.

04 — THE CASSETTE

Fully sealed. That is why it lasts twice as long.

A semi-cassette leaves the underside of the fabric open to the weather. Ours closes into a sealed aluminium shell with the fabric, the arms, the chains and the motor all inside it. No UV on the fabric between uses, no rain in the mechanism, no leaves, no nests. It is the single reason a fabric rated for ten years routinely goes twenty on a full-cassette unit.

05 — THE MOTOR

IP65, soft-start, and it retracts itself.

The motor is rated IP65 — the standard used on offshore marine equipment, sealed against water and salt. It starts and stops softly rather than snatching, which is what saves the fabric and the chain over thousands of cycles, and it runs under 45 dB: quieter than your fridge. The wind sensor is included, not an upsell, and pulls the awning in at around 30 km/h whether you are home or not.

The things people actually ask.

How do I measure my wall?
Measure the clear run of wall you want covered, then how far out you want the shade to reach. Send us a photo with those two numbers and we'll check it against the drawing before anything is cut. If the wall is awkward, that's our problem to solve, not yours.
Why is it half the price of a local quote?
A retailer buys the same cassette from the same class of factory, then adds a showroom, a sales rep, a van and a margin. We ship the unit direct from the production line to your door. Same components, one margin instead of three.
Do you install it?
Not directly. Two people can hang a unit up to 5 m in about two hours with the bracket kit supplied. For anything wider, or for cladding and render, we'll put you onto a local installer — expect $400–800 depending on the city.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every unit is crated and photographed before it leaves the line. If a crate arrives damaged, photograph it before you sign, send us the photos, and we replace the part or the unit at our cost.
Is 30% deposit safe?
The deposit releases production of a unit built to your measurements — it can't be resold to anyone else, which is why it exists. You approve a dimensioned drawing before it's charged, and the balance is only due once the unit is built and photographed, before dispatch.
Will it survive an Australian summer?
The fabric is solution-dyed acrylic rated 8/8 for colourfastness — the colour is in the fibre, not on it. The frame is double powder-coated and salt-spray tested to 1 000 hours, which matters if you're within a few kilometres of the coast.
What about wind?
The sensor retracts the awning automatically at around 30 km/h. It's included, not an upsell. No retractable awning of any brand should be left out in a storm — that's what the sensor is for.
Can I change my mind after ordering?
Until you approve the drawing, yes — nothing has been cut and nothing has been charged. After production starts the unit is your size, so changes mean a new unit.
